Behind the Scenes on the Farm: What Winter Work Really Looks Like
When visitors drive past the farm in January, the fields may look quiet—bare trees, frost-covered ground, and no crowds. But behind the scenes, winter is one of the most important seasons on the farm. While the pace is different, the work never stops.
Planning for the Year Ahead
Winter is when the big picture comes into focus. Our farmers spend time reviewing the past season—what grew well, what customers loved, and what we can improve. Crop planning takes center stage as we map out planting schedules, decide which varieties to grow, and prepare for the months ahead. These plans help ensure a successful harvest and an even better experience for our visitors.
Repairing and Maintaining Equipment
After a full year of hard work, farm equipment deserves some attention. Winter gives us the opportunity to repair, service, and fine-tune tractors, tools, and machinery so everything is ready when spring arrives. Taking care of equipment now helps prevent delays later when timing is critical.
Caring for the Orchard and Crops
Even while the trees rest, they still need care. Winter pruning helps keep our apple trees healthy and productive, encouraging strong growth and quality fruit. We also monitor crops and manage the land to ensure it stays healthy year-round.
Preparing for Tulip Season
One of the biggest signs that spring is just around the corner is tulip season. During the winter months, we’re busy preparing for the beautiful blooms you’ll see in March and April. From caring for the plant to planning pathways, displays, and guest flow, a lot of thought goes into making tulip season both stunning and enjoyable. Winter prep helps ensure healthy blooms and picture-perfect fields when it’s time to welcome visitors back to the farm for one of our favorite seasons of the year.
Preparing for the Fall Season
Winter is also a time to look ahead to the experiences our guests love most in the fall. From planning upcoming events and festivals to improving layouts and attractions, we’re busy preparing for another exciting agritourism season. The goal is to create a welcoming, fun environment where families can make lasting memories.
Quiet Fields, Busy Days
While the orchard may look peaceful this time of year, there’s plenty happening behind the scenes. Winter work lays the foundation for everything that follows—from blooming trees to busy fall weekends. We’re already counting down to welcoming everyone back for another season at Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard!
