Reflecting On Our Fall Season at Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard

Nov 15, 2024 | Stepp's Blog

As the year winds down, we reflect on our 2024 fall season with gratitude, resilience, and hope. This year brought moments of joy, unexpected challenges, and the unwavering support of our incredible community. Here’s a look back at the highs and lows of this unforgettable season.

Starting Strong with Farm Fun in the Sun

Our 2024 fall season began on August 16, and what a beautiful start it was! The farm was bustling with families picking apples, grapes, and vibrant sunflowers and zinnias. Weekends were filled with food trucks, tractor shows, farm activities, and the aroma of kettle corn and donuts in the air.

The energy was infectious, and we couldn’t have been happier to share these special moments with all of you.

Weathering the Storm

On September 26, Hurricane Helene brought challenges to Western North Carolina that we never could have anticipated. Like much of our region, our community was hit hard. The roads leading to the farm sustained severe damage, forcing us to close during the peak of the season.

While this was a tough time, we felt incredibly fortunate that the farm itself was mostly spared, sustaining only minimal damage. We know many in our area were not as fortunate, and our hearts go out to them. What followed was a true testament to the power of community. Local farms, markets, and venues stepped up in extraordinary ways, offering to sell our apples, donuts, and other products. Their kindness and partnership helped us weather the storm—both literally and figuratively.

Resilience and Rebuilding

After a month-long closure, we were able to reopen on October 26. While we had lost precious time during our busiest month, the joy of welcoming visitors back to the orchard made the wait worthwhile.

We extended our fall season until November 10, finishing strong with u-pick apples and pumpkins. The farm was once again filled with the sights and sounds of fall, as families returned to pick, play games, and shop the Apple House.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the season came on November 9, when our friends organized a special “Friends of the Farm” event. It was an unforgettable evening as friends, neighbors, and loyal visitors gathered to show their support. The event was a beautiful reminder of the relationships we’ve built over the years and how they sustain us in challenging times.

Looking Ahead

As we reflect on this year, we are reminded that farming is as much about community as it is about growing crops. Our 2024 fall season tested our resilience, but it also highlighted the incredible strength and kindness of those around us.

We are already looking forward to 2025 with hope and excitement. From tulip season in the spring to apple-picking in the fall, we can’t wait to create more memories with all of you.

Thank you for being part of our journey this year. Your visits, support, and encouragement mean the world to us. Here’s to another year of growth, connection, and farm fun at Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard!
